The Lehman College athletic department announced the hiring of its next softball head coach early Monday afternoon, and the candidate of choice is John Pisano.

From 1994 until present day, Pisano has served as the head coach of the New York Panthers, a travel team which is part of a non-profit organization which helps promote and develop aspiring softball players in the metropolitan area. During his time as the skipper of the Panthers, Pisano has helped numerous girls hone their mental and physical skills before seeing them advance to play collegiate ball.

The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its softball All-Stars for the 2009 season on Tuesday afternoon, and Lehman College was represented as catcher and infielder Vania Cadet was named a CUNYAC Second Team All-Star.

 

Cadet, a first-year Lightning player, put forth a tremendous inaugural season for her team. One of only three players to start in all 31 of Lehman College’s contests this season, the Washington Irving High School product posted a .329 batting average (27-for-82) while leading the team in hits with 27 and runs scored with 23, and she was second on the squad in total bases with 31. In addition, her .421 on-base percentage was second-best on the squad, and her .378 slugging percentage was good for third on the unit.

The No. 3 seeded Baruch College Bearcats defeated No. 6 seeded Lightning of Lehman College, 9-0, in a CUNY Athletic Conference first round playoff game on Wednesday afternoon at the South Field in the Bronx. The Beacats served as the home squad on Lehman’s field.

 

For Baruch College, Melissa Pena led the offense by batting 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Michelle Runko, Gisell Alix and Melissa Mejia each had two hits as part of the team’s 11 total hits on the afternoon.

The Lehman College softball team (5-27 Overall, 2-10 CUNYAC) split a pair of non-conference games, falling to the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels in a 12-11 slugfest in game one before capturing a 9-4 victory in game two. The games took place at the South Field in the Bronx, but the Lightning served as the visitors for both contests.

 

The first game of the afternoon featured Lehman’s Natalie Martinez taking on the Blue Angels’ Meghan Showell. Things looked positive for Lehman early on, as the Lightning plated three runs in the top of the first inning. The Frame was highlighted by a two-RBI single by Genesis Batista. After the Blue Angels failed to score in the bottom of the first inning, Lehman added three more runs in the second inning thanks to a two-RBI single by Monique Sampson who eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. After an inning and a half of play, Lehman led 6-0.

Karen Taylor of USMMA King’s Point threw two one-hitters as the Mariners swept Lehman College in a softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. USMMA took game one, 20-0 in five innings and won game two, 12-0 in five innings. King’s Point’s Stephanie Waller went 2-for-7 with three runs batted in and one run scored on the day.

 

In game one, Taylor gave up her only hit in the top of the third on a bunt by Vania Cadet and finished the game with 10 strikeouts. USMMA put up six runs in the bottom of the first to get the offense rolling. Sarah Marino doubled in the first run of the inning followed by a two run homerun to left field by Jess LaValley. Waller knocked in her first career RBI on a bases loaded ground out to first base. The final two runs came in on a two RBI single up the middle by Stephanie Dawber.

The Lehman College softball team (4-24 Overall, 2-10 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling to Sarah Lawrence College by scores of 17-10 and 13-5 at the South Field in the Bronx on Senior Day.

 

Prior to the game, Lehman’s Director of Athletics, Dr. Martin L. Zwiren, Sports Information Director Stephen Spagnoli, and the Lehman College softball family took a few moments to honor senior Christy Pasqualicchio in a special ceremony celebrating her tenure with the team. Pasqualicchio was presented with a commemorative plaque for her years of dedication and service for the softball squad, and Head Coach Joanna Quirindongo addressed the player that she has coached for two seasons with some heartfelt words.

The Lehman College softball team (4-22 Overall, 2-9 CUNYAC) dropped a pair of CUNYAC contests, falling to the John Jay College Bloodhounds (12-17 Overall, 6-4 CUNYAC) by scores of 17-2 and 12-4 (both via five inning mercy rule) at Floyd Bennett Field.

 

In the opener, John Jay scored nine runs in the bottom of the first and six in the bottom of the second to take a 15-0 lead after two innings. The Bloodhounds were never threatened in the contest and pounded out 18 hits in the win. John Jay’s Nelly Vega was 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI. Fellow teammates Arlene Pena and Olivia Marquez had three hits a piece in the victory. Pena was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and two RBI, while Marquez was 3-for-3 with a run and a pair of RBI. Offensively for Lehman College, Monique Sampson went 1-for-1 with a triple, a run scored, two walks, and an RBI.
