The Lehman College women's tennis team (3-8 Overall, 3-2 CUNYAC) dropped its second consecutive match, falling to the Mills College Cyclones by a score of 8-1 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match played at the APEX Tennis Courts in the Bronx.
Mills College got out to a fast start, capturing all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, the Cyclones' pair of Jennifer Johnson and Kimberly Dutton turned back Lehman's standout combination of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters by a score of 8-2. No.2 doubles saw Mills' Kathy Jentil-Kijiner and Lisa Kelly defeat the Lightning's Gabriela Harewood and Natalee Smith 8-3, and Chelsea Bruno and Amy Funahashi downed Lehman's Mina Jeung and Dalia Rodriguez 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Things stayed relatively status quo as play headed into singles, as the Cyclones applied pressure and captured five of the six singles matches. Lehman's lone victory at singles came from Neville, as she outlasted Johnson 6-1, 7-5 in a grueling match at No. 1 singles. Peters put forth a valiant effort at No. 2 singles, but she fell just short, losing to Jentil-Kijiner 7-5, 6-4. Dutton, Kelly, Bruno, and Funahashi all recorded wins at No's 3, 4, 5, and 6 set singles, respectively. Following the loss, Head Coach Zack Davis gave his thoughts.
“The girls played hard today, but Mills College is very talented and they made a statement and set the tone early in this match,” Davis said. “We left everything out on the court, and the Cyclones did a great job of executing their gameplan today. We'll regroup and get ready for New Rochelle on Monday.”
The Lightning will look to get back on track on Monday afternoon as the team welcomes the College of New Rochelle to the APEX Tennis Courts for a non-conference match, with match time scheduled for 4:00pm.
