The Lehman College women’s volleyball team (7-5 Overall, 3-2 CUNYAC) fell for the third time in their last four games, dropping a non-conference match to the St. Joseph’s College of Brooklyn Bears (8-4 Overall, 3-0 HVWAC) by scores of 25-21, 11-25, 12-25, and 20-25 Monday evening at Brooklyn Tech High School in Brooklyn, NY.
The Lightning started the match on a positive note, outlasting the Bears by four points in a grueling first set. It was all St. Joseph’s from there as the Bears used an all-around team effort to gain momentum and capture the final three sets of the contest.
Despite the loss for Lehman, freshman Gerri-Ann Martin continued her stellar first season with the Lightning, as she tallied 16 kills to go along with 14 digs. In addition to her terrific night, sophomore Lakeisha Gordon put together another impressive effort as she tallied six kills, and freshman Lisa Jagdeo added 23 assists. Sophomore and team captain Jillian Acevedo contributed with 12 digs and four service aces. Following the loss, Head Coach Daniel Skilins expressed his thoughts.
“We started this match on the right foot, capturing the first set, but we weren’t able to maintain the energy throughout the match,” Skilins said. “This is definitely a tough defeat, and we don’t have very long to dwell on this one because we have to get right back out there tomorrow to play St. Elizabeth’s.”
In the victory for the Bears, Tamara Bulatovic had her way with the Lightning as she recorded a team-high 16 kills to go along with nine digs and three solo blocks. Yliane Ulloa tallied eight kills and seven digs, and Bala Huseinovic and Kimberly Donovan had six kills apiece.
As a team, the Lightning hit just .048 on the evening while the Bears recorded a whopping hitting percentage of .270.
Lehman will look to get back on track Tuesday evening at the APEX Center as the Lightning welcome St. Elizabeth’s College to the Bronx for a non-conference match, with match time scheduled for 7:00pm.
