LEHMAN BASEBALL'S JHONNY REYES NAMED ECAC DIVISION III FIRST-TEAM ALL STAR

The Eastern College Athletic Conference announced its year-end baseball awards early Tuesday morning, and Lehman College baseball standout Jhonny Reyes (Walton/Bronx, NY) was named a First-Team All-Star for his tremendous contributions to the Lightning during the 2008 season.

The speedster was Lehman's most explosive offensive threat this past season. Many people classified him as one of the most exciting players in the conference. The senior sensation made good on 44 of his 48 stolen base attempts. He finished second in the conference with a .448 batting average, third in slugging percentage (.645), second in on-base percentage (.540), first in runs scored (58), third in hits (66), and fourth in total bases (91). He also led his team in multi-hit games with 22.

The four-year member of the Lightning was at his best during conference competition, as he hit .448 with 13 RBI's while stealing 19 bases in 19 conference contests. His stellar play against CUNY foes helped the Lightning earn a 9-6 CUNY mark.

Reyes was also named a CUNYAC First-Team All-Star back in May. During the 2008 CUNYAC Baseball Tournament, Reyes was a force for his club, batting .307 while scoring six runs, stealing four bases, and recording two RBI's in three games played. With his help, Lehman was able to capture a game in the tournament after the program hadn't qualified for the conference playoffs since 2003.

“I'm very proud of the way Jhonny performed for us not only this year, but throughout his tenure here at Lehman,” Head Coach John Quirk said. “We're going to miss having him at the top of our lineup. Players like that are hard to replace, but hopefully players that had the chance to see what he did this year appreciate the way he played the game and learn from his character and dedication. I'm extremely happy to have had the opportunity to coach him.”

The Lightning finished the 2008 season with an overall mark of 19-16.
