The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its weekly men’s and women’s swimming and diving award winners late Monday evening, and Lehman College women’s swimming and diving’s Judy Espinal was named Swimmer of the Week for her tremendous performance against the Hunter College Hawks this past Saturday at the APEX Aquatics Center.
This past Saturday, it was the Lightning turning back the Hawks by a score of 116-114, and Espinal’s heroics were a big reason why Lehman came out victorious. The standout won a pair of individual events, setting personal records in the 200-yard individual medley (2:35.69) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.03). The 100-back time is also a new school record. Additionally, she swam the freestyle leg of the 200-yard medley relay in 29.34. After learning that Espinal received the award, Head Coach Peter Kiernan praised the Long Island City High School product.
“Judy has worked diligently to help this team be successful this year, and her contributions for us in the Hunter meet were tremendous,” Kiernan said. “She has done a great job of not just helping us in the pool, but she has set a good example for the rest of the team. She is certainly very deserving of this honor and I’m looking forward to watching her continue to improve.”
The Lightning return to the pool tonight as Lehman battles USMMA’s King’s Point in a non-conference meet, with start-time scheduled for 7:00pm.
