The Lehman College baseball team (4-18 Overall, 1-5 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference game Wednesday evening, falling to the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks by a score of 10-0 at Dobbelaar Field in Hoboken, NJ.

 

Stevens tallied nine runs in the bottom of the first inning against Lehman College starter Raul Cordero to blow the game open. Sophomore infielder Ken Meerdendonk plated the first run of the game off a single to right field to drive in freshman infielder Tom Phillips. Freshman T.J. Alcorn lifted a sacrifice fly to deep right field to score Meerendonk. Junior shortstop Eddie Daniele was then struck by a pitch to plate junior right fielder Russ Grimes from third. Sophomore infielder Mike Pagliaro roped a two-run single to centerfield to drive in Denis Ackerman and junior left fielder Anthony Andrews The final four runs of the inning came on bases-loaded walks issued by freshman pitcher Jose Santiago who relieved Cordero who lasted just 2/3 of an inning.

 

Stevens plated one more run in the bottom half of the third when Ackerman came through with a two-out single to centerfield. Phillips scored from third after he advanced to second on a wild pitch, then to third on a passed ball.

 

Joe Finora picked up the victory on the hill for the Ducks, as he hurled six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters. Vincent Vinci pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six.

 

Despite the loss for the Lightning, senior pitcher/shortstop Andrew Rosario put forth a solid effort on the mound, tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing just one run (earned) on three hits while walking four batters and striking out seven. Emmanuel Vera hurled the final 1 2/3 innings, not allowing a run and scattering just one hit.

 

Offensively for the Ducks, Ackermann finished 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, two walks, and two RBI’s. Phillips finished 1-for-2 while also scored three runs, walking once, and driving in a run. For Lehman at the dish, Bobby Villante, Gilbert Garcia, and Vera accounted for the three Lightning hits, all singles.

 

Lehman will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the team takes on the Baruch College Bearcats in a crucial CUNYAC doubleheader, with the first game taking place at noon.
