Karen Taylor of USMMA King’s Point threw two one-hitters as the Mariners swept Lehman College in a softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. USMMA took game one, 20-0 in five innings and won game two, 12-0 in five innings. King’s Point’s Stephanie Waller went 2-for-7 with three runs batted in and one run scored on the day.

 

In game one, Taylor gave up her only hit in the top of the third on a bunt by Vania Cadet and finished the game with 10 strikeouts. USMMA put up six runs in the bottom of the first to get the offense rolling. Sarah Marino doubled in the first run of the inning followed by a two run homerun to left field by Jess LaValley. Waller knocked in her first career RBI on a bases loaded ground out to first base. The final two runs came in on a two RBI single up the middle by Stephanie Dawber.

 

USMMA added six more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 12-0 lead. Taylor singled down the left field line to plate the first run of the inning. Olivia Norris knocked in the second run on a RBI single to right field. Dawber singled in her third RBI of the game in the third inning. Senior Jen Swanson knocked in the final two runs of the inning on a RBI single to left center.

 

The Mariners increased their lead to 20-0 with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits. Kristen Bell recorded an RBI when she drew a bases loaded walk for the first run. Ana Fuschetto drove in the second run on a RBI single to right field. The third run came in on a fielding error by the shortstop while the fourth run came in on another error by the shortstop. Ali Anderson singled in the fifth run of the inning and Lindsay Watkins single to left field for the sixth run. Swanson earned the final RBI when Anderson scored on a ground out to first.

 

In game two, Taylor again was just about unhittable. She gave up her only hit in the first inning and finished the game with nine strikeouts. The Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a leadoff homerun to left field by Taylor. USMMA took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The first run came into score on a fielding error by the shortstop and the second came in when Kim Saxton scored on a wild pitch.

 

The Mariners big inning came in the bottom of the fourth when they plated nine runs to take a 12-0 lead. Marino got the first run across when she walked with the bases loaded. Saxton was then hit by a pitch to bring in the second run followed by a Swanson hit by pitch for the third run. LaValley then singled up the middle to bring in the fifth and sixth runs of the inning. Norris drove in the seventh run when she reached on an error by the shortstop. Waller followed with a line drive single to center field to plate the eighth run of the inning. The final run came in on a throwing error by the shortstop.

 

Taylor was able to strikeout the side in the top of the fifth as the Mariners cruised to two victories over Lehman.

 

Vania Cadet has a hit in each game for the Lightning despite the team’s defeats.

 

The Lightning will return to action Monday afternoon as the team takes on the College of New Rochelle in a non-conference doubleheader, with start time scheduled for 3:30pm.
