Lehman College men’s outdoor track and field sensation Pete Charles set new standards in the triple jump event this past weekend at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field championships at Marietta College in Ohio as he recorded a leap of 15.25 in the event, placing him second overall and setting a new Lehman College record for that event in the process.
As a prelude to his phenomenal showing at Nationals, Charles put forth a terrific performance in the long jump competition at ECAC's a week earlier, capturing the event with a jump of 6.97. Considered the most consistent contributor for the track and field program over the past three years, Charles worked diligently this past season, helping lead both the indoor and outdoor units to CUNYAC championships this past spring. Now, after breaking the school record in the triple jump competition, the Clare Hall Secondary High School product’s athletic resume has gotten even longer.
Earlier this month, the junior was named Lehman College Male Athlete of the Year at the institution’s annual athletic banquet. He was also named MVP of both the indoor and outdoor seasons by Head Coach Lesleigh Hogg. It’s safe to say that Charles has established himself not only as one of the most celebrated track and field athletes the school has ever had, but one of the college’s greatest athletes of all-time.
“Pete Charles has established himself as the model of consistency for out track and field programs,” Hogg said. “He leads by example and takes a lot of pride in being able to go out there and perform to the best of his abilities. He’s always been a great team guy. As for his performance at Nationals, it’s a tremendous accomplishment for him. It’s another thing that he’s done that nobody before him has been able to do. I’m very proud of him.”
