LEHMAN'S DOROTHY JEAN PIERRE AND OSCAR KAMALU NAMED CUNYAC RUNNERS OF THE WEEK
The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners for men’s and women’s cross country today, and Lehman College was well represented. On the women’s side, staple Dorothy Jean-Pierre was named Female Runner of the Week, while Oscar Kamalu of the men’s unit was given Male Runner of the Week praise.
Dorothy Jean-Pierre, who is expected to lead the Lightning in 2009, began her season by leading all CUNY Athletic Conference runners at the Vassar Invitational. Running the 5k course in Poughkeepsie, NY, Jean-Pierre finished the course in 23:38, placing 24th. The Lehman women placed seventh as a team out of nine participating schools.
Men’s Runner of the Week recognition went to Oscar Kamalu. Running at the Vassar Invitational, Kamalu was the highest CUNYAC finisher, placing 15th. Lehman’s team finished ninth out of 11 participating schools. For the 6k course, he ran a time of 22:19.
Lehman College Head Coach Lesleigh Hogg gave his thoughts on two of his student-athletes receiving these awards.
“It’s a great start for Dorothy and Oscar,” Hogg said. “They are both expected to be vital for their respective teams this season, and they both have worked very hard over the summer with the understanding that they’ll be expected to lead.”
The Lehman College men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action this Sunday when the units compete at the Baruch College Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park.
