On Saturday afternoon, January 30th, the Lehman College men’s and women’s basketball teams will take on the Brooklyn College Bulldogs in doubleheader action on Alumni Day at the APEX Center. The Lightning women will play their game against Brooklyn at noon, and the Lehman men are scheduled to tip-off at 3:00pm. In between those contests, former members of Lehman College men’s and women’s basketball teams will participate in a “throw-back” contest, a game that is always a hit among the Lightning fans.
Some former women’s basketball greats scheduled to be at the APEX Center on January 30th for the annual alumni game included Lehman College women’s basketball all-time leading scorer Sally Nnamani (2,113 career points) as well as Lehman College Hall of Famers Desiree Ross (second all-time in points at the institution with 1,275 points), and Ivelisse Rosario (former four-year Lightning standout as well as current associate head coach of the women’s basketball team). Lehman College head coach Eric Harrison thinks it’ll be great to see some of the former Lightning standouts make their way back to Lehman College.
“To have the opportunity to see so many great women's basketball players of the past on this court is something I look forward to and embrace,” Harrison said. It’s a nice treat for the fans as well, having them see players come back to Lehman that they cheered so diligently for over the years. It’s going to be a fun day indeed."
Former men’s basketball players rumored to be attending include all-time leading scorer Duane Rhoden (1.497 career points), as well as Chris Bowman, Lavar Larrier, Steve Rapp, and current women’s basketball assistant coach Sekani Francis. Lehman College head coach Steven Schulman says that alumni day is one of his favorite days of the basketball season.
“It’s great to see all of the former players come back and not only play in a game together, but also share their life experiences since their playing days ended,” Schulman said. “It’s always great to hear how guys are doing, especially when you had the opportunity to get to know them through coaching. Alumni Day is also a tremendous chance for our fans to see some of their favorite players again, so we’re hoping for a big crowd that day.”
