Lehman College's Tiana Rosa took home CUNYAC Co-Rookie of the Year honors while Jonathan DeJesus and Xavier Garvin took 2nd-team All-Star honors as the CUNYAC announced its all-stars at the Water Club Restaurant in Manhattan earlier this afternoon. The annual luncheon serves as a day to recognize the best basketball players that the conference has to offer, and it also serves as a prelude to the basketball postseason, as the tournaments for both genders will begin this weekend as all of the higher seeds on both sides will host quarterfinal round contests.
Garvin earned second-team praise thanks to his phenomenal regular season for the Lightning in which he led the team with an average of 16.1 points per game while also tying for the team leads in steals with 63 and placing second on the unit in assists with 65. His 402 points were a team-best, and his 69.7 percent conversion rate on his free throw attempts (99-142) led Lehman College.
DeJesus also put forth a stellar 2009-2010 regular season as the sophomore averaged 12.1 points per game while leading the team with an average of 9.8 rebounds per contest and swatting a team-best 25 shots. His 32 steals placed him fourth on the Lightning in that category, and he also made good on 61.5 (72-117) of his free throws, a percentage that tied him for third best on the unit for all players who attempted 30 free throws or more.
The Lehman College men's basketball team will kick off Lehman's slate of weekend competition in Brooklyn. The Lightning, with a 5-8 conference mark, earned the No. 7 seed in the tournament and will take to the road to battle the defending champion Bulldogs in a game slated to begin at 1:00pm.
On the women's side for Lehman College, Tiana Rosa was named CUNYAC Co-Rookie of the Year (she shares the honor with the College of Staten Island's Katelyn Hepworth) after the freshman contributed in a big way for the Lightning. In 24 games, she averaged 8.4 points-per-game while snatching 9.6 rebounds per contest. Her presence in the paint was extraordinary as she led her team with 45 blocks while also connected on a team-best 47.3 percent of her shots (86-182).
The Lehman College women's basketball team will begin what they hope will be a run to a fourth consecutive championship game when the Lightning head to Brooklyn College to battle the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon, with game-time scheduled for 1:00pm.
