The Lehman College men’s tennis team (0-2 Overall, 0-1 CUNYAC) dropped its second consecutive match to begin its 2010 season, falling to the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (1-0 Overall, 0-0 Landmark) by a score of 9-0 Saturday afternoon at the APEX Tennis Courts in the Bronx.
The Mariners took a commanding lead after doubles play as USMMA King’s Point captured all three doubles sets. At No. 1 doubles, it was Jeff Gulitus and William Coulter defeating Miguel Carela and David Chang by a score of 8-2. The Mariners’ Samuel Greene and Biondi Phua recorded an 8-2 win over Lehman College’s Larry Harvey and Joseph Veras at No. 2 doubles, and at No. 3 doubles it was the Lightning’s Marcos Coto-Batres and Dean Garcia falling to USMMA’s Timothy Buxton and Blair Voltz by a score of 8-2.
When play switched over to singles, the Mariners continued to dominate the match. At No. 1 singles, Gulitus downed Chang by scores of 6-1 and 6-1. Coulter silenced Garcia at No. 2 singles, 10-5. No. 3 singles saw USMMA’s Patricia Greene defeated Larry Harvey 10-4. Phua turned back Carela 10-3 at No. 4 singles, and Buxton downed Coto-Batres at No. 5 singles, 10-3. Finally at No. 6 singles, it was Blair Voltz downed Veras 10-6.
The Lightning will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as Lehman will battle the Yellow Jackets of New York City College of Technology in a CUNYAC match. Start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
