Lightning Splits Meet on Senior Night

BRONX, N.Y. - Perhaps inspired to greater heights by the pregame Senior Night ceremony that honored several departing Lightning swimmers, the Lehman women pulled out their fifth individual win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating the visiting SUNY Maritime Privateers 101-90.

Prior to the meet, Basilisa Alonso and Genesis Batista were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the Lightning swim program, which in Alonso's case was a full four years, while Batista was recognized for her two years of competition with Lehman.

Alonso would once again be thrust front and center later on when she was involved in one of the evening's most exciting races, the 200-yard IM.  In that event both she and Mariel Vanderlinden touched the end wall in 2:31.36.  The result was a split of the points awarded for the race, with both women earning 6.5 points for their respective teams.  Vanderlinden proved to be a nemesis on the night for Alonso, as she later beat her outright for the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke.  Prior to that event, however, the Lightning senior captured a first place finish of her own when she took the 100-yard butterfly in 1:08.38.

Nearly stealing the spotlight from the honored seniors was junior Adriana Navarrete, who captured three first place finishes in the 50 free (28.22), 100 free (1:02.22), and 500 free (6:49.70).  Yocari Almanzar was also a top finisher for Lehman, taking the 1000-yard freestyle (14:33.65).

The 1000 free was also the other event on the night that featured two competitors reaching the finish at exactly the same time as both Jennifer Collins of Maritime and Cirleny Gonzalez of Lehman completed the event in 17:11.17 to earn 2.5 points each.

Trying their best to match the women, the Lehman men could not make it a clean sweep, however, as they suffered an excruciatingly close defeat, falling 121-118 to their Privateers counterparts.  Abel Dupres (200 IM, 100 fly), Ramon Peralta (200 free, 100 back) and Ivan Srdanovic (1000 free, 100 free) each won two events for Lehman.  Chris Polanco was narrowly edged in the 50 free, as Maritime's Ryan Luchsinger topped him by 0.29 seconds.

In one of the few meets this season which also included diving, the Lehman duo of Nelson Medina and Victor Pren finished 1-2 in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

Lehman will have one week to tune up before the start of the three day CUNYAC Championships beginning next Thursday at the APEX Aquatics Center.
